Just Say No, To GMO!

Hungary takes a stand against GMO crops!

GMO-Hungary[1]
Hungary has taken a strong stand against biotech corporation Monsanto and their GMO’s. They have burned over 2000 acres of GMO fields within the last 2 years. According to Hungarian deputy secretary of the Ministry of Rural Development, Lajos Bognar, the pollen has not spread from the GM maize onto normal non-transgenic crops. Bognar also said that the investigation will continue despite the fact that seed traders are obliged to make sure that their products are GMO free. Hungary is a country where GMO seeds are banned, unlike many other EU countries.
During the investigation, controllers have found Monsanto products among the seeds planted. Regional public radio reported that the two biggest international seed producing companies are affected, and that GMO seeds could have been sown on thousands of more hectares in the country. Soon local farmers started complaining when they realized there may be widespread GMO seed use.
It was too late to sow new seeds, so this years harvest was lost. The company that distributed the seeds in Baranya county is being liquidated. Therefore, if any compensation is paid by the international seed producers, the money will unfortunately be paid primarily to that company’s investors, rather than the farmers.

In late May, 2013 another 500 hectares (more than 1200 acres) of GM crops were burned after their discovery in Hungary. The aggressive manner in which this country is trying to derail Monsanto’s plans (to overtake even organic crops with hybridization due to pollen spread by wind and pollinators including bees and butterflies) is not only necessary, but valiant.

The Hungarians were the first to take a forceful position against transgenic seeds in the European Union. During recent years, the government of Hungary has destroyed several plantations of crops derived from Monsanto seed. Minister Bognar says the country’s producers are required to ensure they do not use genetically modified seeds.
The Organic Consumers Association offers a list of all the countries that have banned GMO crops. Hopefully, the US will eventually follow the trend, and with activist help, it is indeed possible to defeat Monsanto and their GM friends for good. There is currently a petition to ban GMO test crops in Hawaii that will go before the Hawaii State Senate, if you would like to sign.

By disallowing GMO labeling and promoting the continued commercialization of genetically modified crops, the U.S. government is playing Russian roulette with America’s food future and security. The consequences of Monsanto’s tampering are contributing to biosphere instability, to endangering humanity, and we will all one day have to answer for their irresponsible decisions.  Hungary should be a “role model” for other countries in the world!
